Racisme en studentenverenigingen

Racisme is niet te reduceren tot individuele incidenten van haat. Racisme is soms zichtbaar, soms onzichtbaar, soms doelgericht, soms onbewust, soms een ideologie, een mentaliteit, maar het is altijd een wederkerend patroon dat ook bij ons fundamenteel is ingebed in onze maatschappij. #BlackLivesMatter toonde aan dat dit in de juridische, politieke, sociale en economische structuren in de V.S. verankerd zit. We zouden onszelf echter voorliegen, moesten we er van uit gaan dat enkel in de V.S. een (historische) context bestaat voor racisme. Verontwaardiging over de actualiteit zonder een verdere invraagstelling van onze eigen samenleving is problematisch, want ook bij ons vormen racisme en ongelijkheid een deel van onze maatschappijstructuren. 

Als studentenvereniging vinden we het moeilijk om meteen op de recente gebeurtenissen te reageren. Het is niet de bedoeling om mee op de kar van de sociale media te springen, zonder hier verder over te reflecteren. Ruimte voor verbetering is er zeker, ook in organisaties, waaronder de onze. Als studentenvereniging keuren we elke vorm van racisme af en proberen zo inclusief mogelijk te zijn, maar volstaat dit? We willen graag nadenken over hoe het beter kan, en moet, all year round.

Het gesprek over racisme is ongemakkelijk, pijnlijk en nog vaak taboe. Racisme is echter een groot onderdeel van onze geschiedenis. Het heeft mee onze maatschappij vormgegeven en is zo ook deel van ons dagelijks leven. Veranderen gebeurt niet zomaar, er staat ons allemaal een leerproces te wachten waar wij maar al te graag aan willen bijdragen. Bewustzijn en informatie zijn hierbij key. Om je effectief in te zetten in de strijd tegen racisme is het eerst en vooral belangrijk om te weten waarover je het hebt en wie je bent. We willen daarbij zelf bijleren, maar jullie ook informatiebronnen toereiken waar jullie eveneens terechtkunnen. 

Deze lijst vormt slechts een beginpunt en is niet exhaustief. Zoek  hierna dus verder en blijf leren/ jezelf informeren. Stuur ons gerust goede bijkomende informatiebronnen door, want ook wij willen graag bijleren.

Racism cannot be reduced to individual incidents of hatred. Racism is sometimes visible, sometimes invisible, sometimes purposeful, sometimes unwitting, sometimes an ideology, a mentality, but it is always a recurring pattern that is fundamentally embedded in our society. #BlackLivesMatter showed that this is rooted in the legal, political, social and economic structures of the U.S. The situation in the U.S. is one that is linked to a specific context. However, to think that only there is a (historical) context for racism is to lie to oneself. Indignation about current affairs without further questioning our own society is problematic, because racism and inequality are also part of our social structures. 

We find it difficult as a students’ union to react immediately to recent events. It is not our intention to jump on the social media bandwagon without further reflection. There is certainly room for improvement, also in organizations, including ours. As a students’ union we disapprove of any form of racism and try to be as inclusive as possible, but is this enough? We would like to think about how things can and should be improved, all year round. 

Change does not happen just like that. A learning process awaits us all, to which we are only too eager to contribute.

Talking about racism is uncomfortable, painful and still often taboo. However, racism is a big part of our history, has shaped our society, and therefore is part of our daily lives. In order to be effective in the fight against racism, it is first and foremost important to know what you are talking about and who you are. We want to learn for ourselves, but we also want to give you sources of information where you can inform yourself.
